On a few occasions I have been asked if I would start to make period clothing for young boys. I have decided to start making some child sized garments. The issue of practicability, authenticity and affordability come to hand.

When I made my first child sized sack coat, I learned that the small garments take just as much time to make as the adult sizes do. The only difference is about a half of a yard of fabric.

 I am working on ways to be able to keep the child sized garments affordable.  However I am staying away from making costume grade stuff. There is too much of that out there.

I have been asked if I can make a shell jacket that is the same as an adult wears but made for a small child. I can do that in some cases. However I can't do this and keep the price down at the same time.

The kid’s garments that I make are out of the same fabric and with the same details as my adult garments. The market price per yard of jean wool is the same no matter what size garments are made from it. The Military Depots did not make garments for boys. So any military garments for young kids were made elsewhere. I make them close to an adult garment without being a copy. They are not Depot specific.

It was brought up to my attention a while back that children should not be dressed in military style uniforms. That is not proper period looking. I was thinking about it and made civilian sack coat. Would this be something that you would work? A period civilian coat for kid would blend in to both blue and gray camps. This is what I had in mind  when I made my first kids civilian sack coat. By using civilian style fabrics that are available like corduroy, I have cut some of the cost down

The jacket is made out of the same jean wool and with the same attention to detail as the adult shell jackets. The linings are made out of muslin or homespun fabric. This is a Confederate sack coat pattern that is child sized. This military looking sack coat will look like it came from home. The coat is made out of jean wool. The lining is made out of muslin, Osnaburg or homespun fabric. The collar is the basic stand up military style collar. There is one outside pocket on the coat. BOYS NORTH CAROLINA SACK COAT

This is a North Carolina sack coat pattern that is child sized. The coat is made out of jean wool. The lining is made out of muslin, Osnaburg  fabric. The collar is the basic stand and fall style collar. The coat has a black shoulder tab sewn in place. KID’S UNLINED SHELL JACKET

This child-sized jacket is not from any Confederate Depot. The jacket is made out of heavy wool and is unlined. This coat has a six-piece body and a one-piece sleeve. This is the perfect coat for a young man in both confederate and union camps. This sack coat is a modified version of a sack coat pattern made to look civilian and to fit a child. The coat is made out of wide gage corduroy or heavy cotton. The coat is lined with muslin or homespun, there are four bone buttons and the buttonholes sewn by hand. This is a Federal sack coat pattern that is child sized. The coat is made out of dark blue Woolrich and is unlined. There is one inside pocket on the coat. The Confederate Boys pants are made out of gray wool or jean wool. They have a yoke back and solid waist band . There is a draw string in the back. There are side seam pockets and button fly. All button holes and eyelets are sewn by hand.
