The Sumac fabric is traditionally dyed using vegetable and mineral dyestuffs documented to have been used in the 1860's this fabric offer an excellent insight into colors of the period. It will fade to look like museum pieces.

The naturally dyed cloth is not dyed in modern stainless steel equipment using modern methods, as are all the other woolen jeans now available. The cloth is piece dyed in a vat using only natural dyestuffs available in the South during the war. We use sumac and logwood in our various dye recipes taken from period dye books.

The Vegetable dyed fabric is guaranteed to fade and turn ugly. Our naturally dyed logwood, sumac will fade and change color. Though our sumac jean is relatively uniform in color when new, the wool color changes to a khaki color and the cotton changes to a cream color with exposure. This color, sometimes called "butternut" is the color of many surviving uniforms. The logwood color fabric is also uniform in color at the start and will start to fade to the color of sumac, then will take on a golden color.
